Worried about SSC exam, girl committed sucide in mira road

MUMBAI: On a day when lakhs of students appeared for their Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination that began on Tuesday, a Mira Road Std X student committed suicide just an hour before her paper.

Zainab Shaikh, a resident of Jai Vijay Nagar near Silver Park, was to appear for her Urdu exam on Tuesday. Around 9 am, she had breakfast with her mother Shabnam (38) and younger brother Shahzad (14). By 10 am, she went to her bedroom get ready.

When Zainab did not step out of the bedroom for over 15 minutes, her mother, worried that the girl would not be able to make it to her exam centre at Don Bosco School in Mira Road, knocked on the door, but didn't get a response. A domestic help employed by the Shaikhs called out to Zainab, but the girl didn't answer.

A worried Shabnam then called the police. Policemen rushed to the Shaikh residence and broke open the door to Zainab's bedroom. They found her hanging from the ceiling fan with a dupatta. No suicide note was found.

In her statement to the police, Shabnam, a single mother, said her daughter was depressed for the last 15 days. Zainab, who was good in her studies, was worried about the exam and had stayed up late on Sunday to study.
